North Centennial Manor is a non-profit Long-Term Care facility established in 1967 and home to 78 residents. The home functions to deliver long-term care to elderly persons, people with disabilities, and those who have a chronic or prolonged illness.

About the Opportunity

North Centennial Manor is seeking a highly motivated Activity Lead to join our team in Kapuskasing, ON, on a full-time basis.

In this role, the successful candidate will assess, plan, implement, and evaluate multi-faceted social and recreational activity programs/events that are reflective of residents’ interests in order to meet the resident’s functional, physical and social needs. With the overall objective of maintaining or increasing the intellectual, spiritual well-being, health and overall physical abilities/independence of residents through organizing social activities and tailoring them to their needs and abilities. 

Key responsibilities for this role include:

  • Organizing and implementing an activity program for residents while maintaining interest and progression over a period of time.
  • Keeping the calendar updated to ensure there are no scheduling conflicts with other departments.
  • Encouraging involvement and attendance from the local community.
  • Recruiting, orientating and implementing practices to retain volunteers at the Manor.
  • Collaborating with therapy and physiotherapy assistant to create programs in the most effective manner and enhance resident life.
  • Promoting the engagement of the resident council and family council.
  • Assisting residents to follow licensed therapists' treatment plans (OT, PT, Nursing, Speech Therapy, Dietician).
  • Communicating these plans to appropriate members of the health care team.
  • Participating in the admission, quarterly, significant change and annual review process of all residents. 
  • Receiving and responding to referrals from other members of the health care team related to resident care needs.
  • Ordering, storing, tracking and distributing supplies and equipment per product/policy guidelines and based on a budget estimated annually in collaboration with the Administrator.
  • Submitting to the Administrator proposed budget and program changes relative to department functions and responsibilities.
  • Educating staff and residents regarding the equipment used to provide activities to the Manor such as Montessori program tools, bean bag toss, Wii programs.
  • Assisting on committees related to resident care.
  • Participating in continuous quality improvement of the Manor and its associated care services by collecting and documenting CMI data as well as offering suggestions to registered staff, DOC, administrator regarding resource allocation.
  • Supporting and participating in education relevant to LTC to ensure skills and abilities are maintained and enhanced.
  • Participating in all aspects of Infection Prevention and Control including following established practices such as ensuring the labelling of personal care equipment, cleaning and disinfecting resident care equipment and restocking infection control supplies.
  • Maintaining standards of the department and upholding the policies and procedures of the Manor.
  • Assisting in creating and maintaining a culture of safety in the Manor.
  • Orientating students or staff to duties of the position as requested.
  • Competent computer skills working with Microsoft Office suite software.

More About You

In order to qualify for this role, you will need to have a post-secondary diploma or degree in therapeutic recreation, kinesiology or other related fields. The successful candidate will need to have at least one year of experience in a health care setting. The Montessori training and the GPA certification is an asset, as will be the knowledge of the RAI-MDS process and computer application. Given the remote nature of the area, a valid driver's license or reliable transportation will be essential assets for this position.

Please note that the successful candidate will be required to provide a Vulnerable Sector Police Record Check.

As our ideal candidate, you'll be well-versed in multi-tasking, time-managing, prioritizing projects, and guiding residents during activities to ensure their well-being. Your ability to liaise with other stakeholders such as the Home Auxiliary, health care team members, educational facilities, community programs and volunteers will ensure your success in this role.

Above all, you’ll have strong verbal and written communication skills in ideally both English and French, to interact effectively with residents, their families, coworkers and physicians, in a courteous and clear manner.

The successful candidate will receive a remuneration package in accordance with the Canadian Union of Public Employees. You'll also be entitled to an excellent package which includes:
